Meet the Team
Dr. Maria N. Psomas
Dr. Maria N. Psomas Pasiali was born in Tripoli prefecture of Arcadia and lived there until she was five. Maria has two brothers, Kosta, and Petro, and was raised by her parents Vasiliki and Father Panagiotis. In 1969, the family decided to move to the U.S. to build its future. Maria grew up, studied, and received her training in the U.S.
After graduating high school, Maria went on to study Medicine at Minnesota University School of Biological Sciences and the Medical School. She majored in Internal Medicine and more specifically in Cardiology followed by Anesthesiology. After completing her major and specialty, she went on to build her career in Medicine.
Her first job was at Mayo Clinic in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology. She nursed for six months in the coronary unit and one year in various specialties of Cardiology, such as vascular cardiology-echocardiography, outpatient cardiology, and beeper code coverage for the entire Mayo Clinic Hospital. She then continued her career as a permanent Anesthesiologist.
"During the time of my specialty in Cardiology, I was in the hospital 120 hours per week and was on call every other day. By then I had my first two sons and my work schedule was so overwhelming that I was absent from my family constantly. That is when I decided to shift my career’s focus on Anesthesiology. The knowledge and experience I gained from the specialty of Cardiology provided me with complete cardiac and respiratory control over my future surgical patients."
In 1995, after years of work in the U.S., Maria decided to return to her home country, Greece, and work at the hospital «ΥγεÎ¯α» (Hygeia) alongside many experienced surgeons of all specialties. Added to that, she continued to work with Mayo Clinic by signing a fixed-term contract that allowed her to work there for 12 weeks per year. This opportunity allowed her to come into contact with the latest technological advances in Anesthesiology and keep her up to date on new methods and guidelines.
During her studies, Maria has also attended seminars in Biology and Psychology.
"Through these studies, I was interested in Pathophysiology mechanisms behind each disease encountered. My patient’s cardio-physiology and their response to various treatments and medications would educate me further about the underlying disease."
Maria's mission is to annihilate the fear and pain her patients are experiencing. Her reward lies in her patients' happiness and relief when they exit the O.R., ready to get back to their normal life.
In recent years, there have been major breakthroughs in understanding pain. Pain has the ability to change the outcome of a surgical wound healing in many pathological conditions such as diabetes, rheumatic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, malignancies, and pain decelerates recovery.

Maria’s goal is to provide each patient with perioperative care before, during, and after every surgical operation. This is done in order to minimize the extent of pain and consequences it might have on the patient, whether it’s physical or psychological.
Regarding patients dealing with chronic pain who are not surgical candidates, multimodal methods of pain suppression are used. These methods have been proven effective in dealing with pain and secure a better quality of life. They are also known as Pain Relief and Pain Management.
Since 1996, Maria has been receiving 30 to 60 CME credits per year via the SEE program provided by the American Society of Anesthesiologists to stay up to date with the emerging knowledge and scientific literature pertinent to clinical anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine.
Apart from being a doctor, Maria is also a mother of four sons. She is a woman that has been able to devote her life to the world of science and at the same time balance her personal and professional life by spending time with family and teaching her sons important values. She enjoys traveling, adventures, friendship, and above all unforgettable family moments.
